The Spoken Word Poetry Club
Our Spoken Word Poetry Club serves as a creative outlet for individuals to express themselves through poetry, allowing them to develop their skills and share their unique voices. Under the guidance of myself and my fellow poet and co-head, we aim to create a supportive environment where members can write, practice, and perform their original poems. Our goal is to showcase our talents through events that engage the local Bard community and bring poetry to life in dynamic and impactful ways. The Spoken Word Club is not only open to poets; if you consider yourself a singer, rapper, or writer, you can find a space in our poetry club. Many spoken word pieces have a musical component, and a lot of spoken word poetry is rooted in hip-hop and rap, so all of these art forms are welcome and highly encouraged!
As a Black student from Baltimore, Maryland, and the Baltimore City Youth Poet Laureate, I have often felt that my perspective is underrepresented at Bard. Through this club, I hope to not only share my own experiences but also provide a platform for others from underrepresented backgrounds to express their stories and connect with their peers. We are committed to giving a voice to Maryland and the DMV area, showcasing what that culture is like while also amplifying the voices of those from other underrepresented areas and backgrounds, ensuring our narratives are heard both on campus and beyond.
Join us in fostering creativity, community, and representation through spoken word. Whether you're a seasoned poet, just starting out, or identify more as a rapper or singer, all are welcome. We invite you to be part of our dynamic and inclusive space!
